Food Bank Programs

Our Food Bank Programs extend beyond weekly shopping. Fresh produce donations, holiday support, and seasonal efforts help neighbors access nutritious food year-round. Community members can help by donating, volunteering, or supporting these programs.

Grow for Helpline (via Bainbridge Prepares)

Grow for Helpline helps keep fresh produce on our food bank shelves throughout the growing season. In partnership with Veg Club and the Bainbridge Prepares Food Resilience Team, local gardeners and farmers share vegetables and fruit with neighbors who need them.

  • Donate extra produce from your home garden or a garden bed you’re not using
  • Volunteer at local community farms like Peaceful Morning or Rock Farm
  • Care for fruit trees and vines so harvests can be shared when ready

Every item you donate or help grow is vital. Please record your donations with Helpline staff as “Grow for Helpline.”

Plant a Row

Plant a Row is a community program that provides fresh vegetables to neighbors in need year round. By growing just one extra row, local gardeners help keep high-quality produce available at the food bank.

  • Plant an extra row of broccoli, beets, carrots, green onions, beans, peas, or lettuces starting in January–February and harvest through spring
  • Deliver your harvested clean produce to our food bank delivery area

Fresh produce is gratefully appreciated. Drop off donations Mon–Fri, 10 AM–4 PM, or contact our Food Bank Manager at foodbankmanager@helplinehouse.org

Kids’ Pantry

Our Kids’ Pantry Program supports Bainbridge Island children during school breaks, when access to regular meals can be disrupted. During winter, mid-winter, spring, and summer breaks, each child receives a bag of kid-friendly breakfasts, lunches, and snacks in addition to their household’s weekly food bank shopping. The program helps families manage food needs during times of unexpected financial strain.

  • Donate kid-friendly, individually packaged snacks and meals (juice boxes, granola bars, mac & cheese cups, fruit snacks, crackers, etc.)
  • Donate grocery gift cards to help us purchase fresh items for bags

Summer Helpers

Our Summer Helpers Program offers family volunteer opportunities for children ages 7 to 13. Kids and tweens volunteer alongside a parent or guardian, gaining hands-on experience helping their community. Short shifts make it easy for families to participate during summer break.

  • Volunteer July 8 through Aug 30
  • For children ages 7–13, with a parent or guardian

Visit our Volunteer Opportunity page to get started.

Share the Harvest

The Share the Harvest Program brings fresh, nutritious food from local farms to our food bank. This program connects neighbors in need with high-quality, locally grown produce they might not otherwise be able to access, strengthening our community’s food resilience.

Your gift makes a difference—every donation helps purchase fresh food for neighbors in need.

Holiday Programs

Gifts for Kids

Kids (under 18) receive one $25 gift card during their food bank shopping as part of our Kids Holiday Giving Program. Your donation helps provide holiday cheer and the freedom to choose gifts that bring joy to children in our community.

  • Donate $25 gift cards from local merchants or Amazon

Gifts for Seniors

Our Senior Holiday Giving Program provides a $25 gift card to clients age 55 and older during holiday food bank visits. Donor support helps cover added costs during the holidays for neighbors living on limited incomes.

  • Donate $25 gift cards from local merchants or Amazon

Thanksgiving Sharing

We offer Thanksgiving shopping where households can choose holiday foods and pantry staples as long as you are registered with the food bank. Shoppers receive grocery store gift cards based on household size, along with a turkey or chicken item if available.

  • Donate $25 Safeway or Town & Country gift cards
  • Donate Thanksgiving items anytime before Thanksgiving: coffee, teas, sparkling beverages, spices (cinnamon, basil, oregano), baking supplies (sugars, sweetened condensed milk, baking powder/soda—no flavorings or flour needed), olives, stuffing, or canned pumpkin
